Creating Your Life

Creating Your Life and Loving Your Work, Point #1: To turn your passion into profit, you first need to stop believing the story that this is impossible

So today we’re talking all about the very important question of “Can you really do what you love to do?” And I’m not just talking about if you can start a business you love and make money doing it. I’m also talking about if you already own a business that you’re passionate about, but maybe you’re not doing what you love all day long. So there’s something in this episode for every entrepreneur or soon-to-be entrepreneur out there.

Last week, two clients of mine were talking about how they aren’t passionate about their day job but they LOVE what they do at night and on the weekends. And they were so excited about those projects in their spare time, but were convinced they couldn’t make money doing it. And right now, I want to ask every single listener: have you ever been there? Have you ever told yourself that you can’t do that? Because I’ve always had this mindset that you can make money at whatever you put your mind to.

And if you want to turn your passion into profit, the FIRST thing you need to do is believe it’s possible. Because this thought that you can’t monetize the thing you love, that you can’t make money at it, that there’s no money in that industry is nothing but a story going around in your head. And maybe it’s not even your story. Maybe it’s a story that your spouse, your family or someone else in your life has told you. Most likely, those people don’t have bad intentions. They’re probably looking out for you. But they also shouldn’t be a business adviser because they are not in the business of helping entrepreneurs. They are in the business of avoiding potential risk (even though it could reap massive, massive, massive rewards.)

So if you feel like you’ve had this story going on in your head, this episode – this moment right now – is the exact moment where you need to decide to stop settling.

Creating Your Life and Loving Your Work, Point #2: Focus on crafting your own life with the same creativity and openness as you use during arts-and-crafts

Instead of settling, I want you to think about life crafting. Recently, I was thinking about putting together collages and paintings and murals and art and I realized that when you’re in a craft environment, messes can turn into the coolest thing on the planet – mainly because you’re creative and you’re open. And so in a craft environment, no matter what you’re crafting, you end up creating a final product that you love. Yet we never think about life that way…and I want to change that.

I want you to start thinking about the fact that just like an arts-and-crafts project, you get to craft your own life and your own business. Life gives you constant opportunities and you can choose to seize them or let them pass you by.

The reason we don’t often think of life as a craft is because when you get into a routine, you rarely take a step back, pause and ask yourself questions like:

  • Is this the life I really want to craft?
  • Am I doing what I love to do every single day?
  • Am I waking up excited to be doing what I love every single day?

Those are the questions I want you to ask right now. Then use those answers to help you craft the life that you want. And that begins with doing what you love. After all, you’ll probably spend the majority of your life working or sleeping – so you better love what you do for work!

And if you’re still thinking, “But there’s no money in my industry. There’s no money in what I want to do.” Throw out that freakin’ story! (And move onto point 3, which will help you write a new one…)

Creating Your Life and Loving Your Work, Point #3: Questions to ask yourself to find your passion and find the money in it!

Now, some of you may also be feeling lost about just finding a passion. After all, self-discovery is not something that’s taught in college. So unless you’ve actually invested both time and money into personal development and figuring out what you love, you may not even know that you have a burning passion inside of you to do something. So invest in YOU first and discover your passions.

But once you figure out what lights you up inside, you can take the first step toward figuring out how to monetize it. And if you’re thinking, “Well, no one makes money doing that,” I’m going to challenge you and ask, “Can you think of just one measly person who’s making a good living off of it?” And if you can, you’ve just created evidence that opportunity exists.

Then, you need to tell yourself that it’s okay to try this thing that you love. I’m already giving you permission right now, but you need to give yourself it too. And then it’s time to ask yourself some more questions, including:

  • What is keeping me from taking this leap? Maybe you’re scared of failing at the thing you love most. Maybe you’re scared that you won’t make money at it at first. Uncover those feelings and those reasons that are holding you back from crafting that life that you want and deserve.
  • Why am I making an excuse that I can’t make money doing the thing I love? Because if there’s one person in your industry who’s making money at it, you have now found evidence it’s possible.
  • How can I make money with it? (Especially instead of saying, “There’s no money in it!”).
  • What’s my risk tolerance? Is that preventing me from actually taking the leap? Because maybe you’re being held back by the fact that you don’t want to add more risk to your life because you have a mortgage or have kids or whatever. But you don’t have to quit your present job and follow this dream starting tomorrow!
  • What would it take for me to make that leap? And how can I make that leap?

Creating Your Life and Loving Your Work, Point #4: Steps to take to slowly start turning your passion into your career. (Or to start enjoying your passion project job 24/7)

Once I quit the job I wasn’t enjoying anymore and I started doing things that I really loved, I created a six-figure business in months because it was so easy to monetize exactly what I was passionate about when I allowed myself the opportunity. And that’s what I’m asking you to do.

And just like I mentioned in the bullet points above, you can ease into doing the thing you love. You can start out on weekends or nights or mornings, and then you can keep adding more and more.

And once you start to build proof that the potential is there, it can become a reality. All of a sudden, one small step at a time, you can build that business you are so excited about. If you can figure out what really lights you up inside, you’re going to stop letting silly excuses prevent it from happening.

Now, if you’re already doing the thing you freakin’ love, I have some new questions:

  • Are you doing the thing you love to do all day long?
  • Are you staying within your zone of genius all day long?
  • Or are you doing things that you need to do for your business but don’t actually love?

And if you’re realizing that you’re only answering “yes” to question number 3, here’s two more questions for you:

  1. Why on Earth wouldn’t you just hire someone to do all the things that aren’t in your zone of genius or that don’t light you up?
  2. And if the reason comes down to money, is money ever going to come if you’re stuck doing all the things that don’t light you up?

You could actually work less hours and be more productive if you only focused on the things that the business needs YOU for!

So often, we think that we’ve crafted the life that we want. But like I said at the beginning of this episode, it takes some sort of pause and reflection to really think about where you are now, where you want to be and how you can make that visualization become reality.

Creating Your Life and Loving Your Work: The Bottomline

If you take one thing away from this episode, I hope it’s to craft your life like an art project – putting things on, taking things off, experimenting with different things, different colors, different different sizes, different shapes – until you create the exact life and the exact business that you’ve always dreamed about.

So your breakthrough game plan challenge for this week is to think about your life like an arts-and-crafts project, to think about it with fun and zest, and to think about how you want to craft exactly what you want. You can begin by writing down what you love and your zone of genius, and then matching what you’re doing with what you love and slowly delegating everything else until you’re free.

Because the most massive breakthrough is going to come when what you’re doing in your business matches your zone of genius and what you love.
