zone of genius

The zones we work in.

A couple of years ago, I read this really good book called The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. In it, Gay outlines the different “zones” we all work in. The lowest level is the zone of incompetence. This is the stuff you’re just not good at. Spending time on anything in this zone is not well spent because you just don’t have the skills to do it. The next level is the zone of competence. This zone is something you do well at and something others can do just as well as you. It might be a good use of your talent, but maybe not such a good use of your time since others can do this just as well as you can. The next is the zone of excellence. This is what you can do really well. This zone might not have that underlying passion or desire attached to it, but it is a good use of your time and talent since you are really good at it. But the best use of your time is the zone of genius. This is when you are living and doing the stuff you’re great at and the stuff you love. In this zone, you feel aligned and inspired. This is what you can do in a way no one else can.

I want to challenge you to find your zone of genius. What are you so freaking good at that it differentiates you from your competition? For me, it’s teaching sales. I know that this is the best use of my time and what I can help people the most with. So I want to spend as much time in this zone as possible. Whatever your zone of genius is, that’s where you truly shine. Once you know that, you can start determining how you can stay in that zone as much as possible.

Staying in your zone of genius.

To stay in your zone of genius, you need to delegate, eliminate, automate. Look at everything you are doing in your business. What are you spending time on that falls in that zone of competence? What can other people do just as well (or even better) than you? That’s what you need to try to delegate. Then think about what you can eliminate. What’s not really needed? And finally, determine what you can automate. Is there any kind of smooth process you can come up with that can save you from wasting time on painstaking tasks?

Remember that you are not just selling to people. You are SERVING people. The world needs you to stay in your zone of genius as much as you can because that’s where you will make the most impact. That’s where you can help people the most. Delegating, eliminating, and automating, will help you stay there.
