Building Authentic Relationships Online That Lead to Sales

In this episode of The Breakthrough Babe Podcast, I’m talking about how to cultivate authentic relationships online that lead to sales. In the last episode, I talked about a pattern I see happening that’s driving me nuts. I see people throwing their offers in my DMs and sending an automated message with their free offer just so they can get my email address. This kind of technique DOESN’T WORK. So in this episode, I wanted to share with you what DOES work. I’ll give you some clear tips for establishing solid connections so you can sell online (without being annoying and spammy!)

But before we dive right in, let me introduce myself in case this is your first visit. I am your host, Jen Gitomer, creator of Breakthrough Babe and author of the best-selling book, Sales in a New York Minute.

And it is time to make massive breakthroughs in YOUR life. With each episode, you are going to move past your fears of asking for the sale, learn to build deep connections that lead to meaningful business results, and master sales strategies that will help you grow and scale your business. Each week, I will be providing you with tips to avoid common mistakes in your business, teach hacks to help you grow and scale faster, and teach you to ALWAYS ask for the sale with confidence.

Tip #1: Show up as your authentic self.

I had a client recently tell me that her personality is actually really goofy, but not many people would know that about her because that’s not how she shows up in business. I can relate. I used to think that being professional meant I couldn’t be fun. I hid a lot of my personality so I could appear polished and perfect. But what I didn’t realize at that time was that hiding myself actually hurt my sales rather than helped it.

I know now that people appreciate when someone is real and relatable. If you think about the people you follow and the people you like, there’s probably something fun and quirky about their personality that you like a lot. So why would you think that people won’t appreciate those things about you? I encourage you to be yourself online. Whatever makes you unique, bring that to your business.

Tip #2: Know the difference between talking to many and talking to one.

When you make a general post, go live, or talk in your stories, you’re talking to many people. That’s something everyone can see. When you send a DM, you’re talking to one person. These are meant to be different! Don’t treat a DM like you would another post. It’s not meant to be automated. It should be personal.

A good rule of thumb is that if you personally don’t like something, don’t do that thing to another person! People can tell if something is being sent out in mass. No one likes those kinds of messages. What people do appreciate, and what will make someone actually want to buy from you, is a personalized message. Connect with someone based on common interest or something they said that resonates with you. That’s what will make an impression, not spammy automated messages. It takes more work, but that personal touch is ALWAYS worth it.

Tip #3: Provide value your customers care about.

If you are a coach, content creator, or service provider, your customers are looking to YOU as the expert. They want to know what kind of expertise you offer. So if you’re not sharing it, I want to ask you– what’s holding you back? Is it fear? Are you afraid your content isn’t good enough? Are you afraid it won’t sell? I challenge you to trust yourself and start sharing. If you show up in an authentic way, people will want to buy.

In today’s world, you often don’t know who you’re talking to. It’s okay to have a team, of course! But I encourage you to find a way to personalize your messages so that people know it’s really you.
