Today I’m revealing the sales mistakes you absolutely need to avoid. For even more sales tips, listen to ALL of episode 42 of the Breakthrough Babe Podcast on your fave streaming platform.
I’ve seen a big uptick in the number of DMs I get on Instagram trying to sell me something. They’ll say something like, “Hey Jen. I came across your page, and I dig your style and content. I have a free offer I think you’d be interested in.” Now you might think, what’s wrong with that? They’re giving you a free offer. Yes, and they’re giving it to me so that they can get my name and email address to put me in their sales funnel. That is something I teach. Put something of value out and get people into your funnel. But this isn’t the way to go about it.
Listen, would you ever go up to someone in real life, shake their hand, and say, “Hey I have this offer you might be interested in. Can I get your email address?”, of course not! So why are you doing that online? A good rule of thumb is that if you wouldn’t do it in person, don’t do it online. I will tell you right now that selling in this way only irritates people. There is a much better way to connect with people.
Instead of using this spammy technique, work to build authentic and genuine connections. Work to build a rapport with people. I once connected with someone because I saw they used the same essential oils as me. It can be really simple! But work to find a real connection. Don’t sell to someone right away. Instead, make them want more. Make THEM ask the questions about how to work with you, rather than you just showing up and throwing your offers in their face.
Jen Gitomer gained her prowess in NYC as both a salesperson and award-winning sales leader for a Fortune 500 company. She left corporate America to fulfill her entrepreneurial dream. Jennifer helps entrepreneurs increase their revenue and profit through her proven sales strategies. In addition to the Breakthrough Business Babe Podcast, Jennifer co-hosts the Sell or Die podcast with her husband, Jeffrey.

When she’s not working, you’ll find Jen planning her next Paris trip, taking a yoga class, playing tennis, or hanging out with her family and Cavalier King Charles fur babies.
Does it take more work to authentically connect rather than showing up in someone’s DMs and selling to them right away? Yes, it does. But I promise you, building rapport will lead to a much better outcome. Which eventually means more income for you too!
